Deploying WiFi-6 in HKU Main Campus and Student Residential Halls

1. Introduction

ITS is now in the process of deploying the latest WiFi 6 (IEEE 802.11ax) equipment for improving WiFi connectivity in the Main Campus and student residential halls.

WiFi 6 supports more simultaneous WiFi connections to the WiFi Access Points (APs) and higher traffic bandwidth, leading to better network performance and connection quality.

2. WiFi Upgrade in Main Campus

In the past, the WiFi Access Points (APs) installed in the Main Campus are of the WiFi 4 (IEEE 802.11n) and WiFi 5 (IEEE 802.11ac) standards.   In the next few months, around 500 new WiFi 6 APs will be installed in the following buildings of Main Campus to replace the old ones and cover areas where weak WiFi coverage has been noticed:

  • Main Library
  • Meng Wah Complex
  • Main Building
  • Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre

The above upgrade work is expected to complete by May 2021.

3. WiFi Upgrade in Student Residential Halls

Since summer 2020, ITS has started the implementation of a new room-based WiFi 6 infrastructure for improving the WiFi support in student halls.  In addition to WiFi 6, the new APs also support WiFi 4 and/or WiFi 5.  This upgrade project is expected to complete in summer 2022.
