Virtual PCs (VPC) is an initiative of ITS to reduce the effort of PC management in departments for improved work efficiency. Around 800 VPC boxes have been deployed for use in 70 departments and over 1,200 user accounts of staff VPCs for the departments have been set up.
I. VPC Use by Research Postgraduate Students
To further improve the work efficiency of departments related to the provision and support of PC facilities, we are working to extend the VPC usage for Research Postgraduate (RPG) students from July 2020. Departments can raise requests to provide VPCs for use by their RPGs by submitting the CF85 form. No charge to departments will be involved.
Access to a user’s VPC, which is configured with Windows 10, a common set of software and 100GB personal drive, is supported through a small VPC box that can be provided to each user. Using VPC can save considerable resource and effort of departments that would otherwise be required in handling the purchase, set-up and support of desktop PCs deployed among RPGs (please click here for more details on the benefits of VPC).
II. New VPC Inventory System
To facilitate departmental management of the inventory of their VPCs, a new VPC Inventory System has been developed for departments to enquire the following information of their VPCs:
- Current status and details of the VPC applications submitted (CF85);
- Inventory record of the VPC assigned; and
- User of the VPC
Departments interested in using the VPC Inventory System can apply for the administrator right by submitting CF125a.
