To cope with the increasing demand for Internet bandwidth in supporting the University's teaching, learning and research activities, the HARNET-Internet connection which links the eight tertiary institutions in Hong Kong has been upgraded in the last few months under the collaborative effort of the Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC) for increasing its capacity and resilience.
The two upgrades conducted are:
- March 2019 - the physical links to global Internet via Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) has been upgraded from a single to dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet links and the total bandwidth is uplifted from 6.8 Gbps to 7.92 Gbps.
- September 2019 – the HARNET bandwidth of 7.92 Gbps has been further upgraded to 8.7 Gbps the maximum and out of the 8.7 Gbps, 1.8 Gbps is dedicated and guaranteed for use by HKU. Besides, a resilient router is added at the other core site of HARNET to provide resilient connection to local Hong Kong Internet.
Apart from the connection to global Internet, HARNET continues operating two connections at the following bandwidth:
- 20Gbps to local HK Internet via Hong Kong Internet Exchange (HKIX)
- 10Gbps to HARNET’s gateway to international Research and Education Network (REN) connections
