Upgrade of HARNET-Internet Connection and HARNET Backbone Equipment

To cope with the increasing demand for Internet bandwidth in supporting the University's teaching, learning and research activities, the HARNET-Internet connection which links the eight tertiary institutions in Hong Kong has been upgraded in the past few months under the collaborative effort of JUCC (Joint Universities Computer Centre).

The new HARNET backbone Internet service has been supported by a new service provider, Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) since early March 2017 after a smooth migration done.   In July 2017, the HARNET backbone equipment has been upgraded and replaced by high performance Cisco routers and switches for improved performance.

After the upgrade, the HARNET-Internet connections are now operating at the following bandwidth:

  • Average 5.8 Gbps to global Internet
  • 20 Gbps to local HK Internet via HKIX
  • 1 Gbps to Asi@Connect (the successor of Trans-Eurasia Information Network project)
  • 155 Mbps to China Education and Research Network (CERNET)
