Updates on Learning Environment

Summer is always a busy time for the Learning Environment Services Team. This summer has been no exception. We continue to work to improve both the physical environment and our services in order to enhance the student learning experience with innovative and flexible technologies. Here are some updates, organized into four areas, namely “Learning Environment Support”, “Classroom Support”, “Performance and Event Support”, and “Media Production and Support”:

1. Learning Environment Support

New 24 Hours (Study) Zone at 1/F Chi Wah Learning Commons

We are pleased to announce that at the start of the new semester for academic year 2016-17, the NEW 24 Hours (Study) Zone located at 1/F Chi Wah Learning Commons in the Centennial Campus opened for students, the area is shown on the graphic below. Students may access Windows computers, iMac computer bar, printing and scanning facilities, water facilities and bathrooms, together with the full coverage of the University Wi-Fi service day and night.

Note: The 24-hour (Study) Zone will remain open after the closure of the general study facilities at 12:00 midnight and will be staffed by our security staff overnight.

New Opening Hours of The Oval and The Curve

You may have noticed that both The Oval (including Room KB-110) and The Curve re-opened at the start of the new semester with the new opening hours as follows:

Mon - Sun (including public holidays): 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Further improvements to the furniture at the Oval are ongoing and 24-hour access to Learning Spaces has been moved to the NEW 24 Hour (Study) Zone at 1/F Chi Wah Learning Commons in the Centennial Campus where it is possible to provide full-time security for your safety.

Opening hours of all facilities are reviewed regularly.


2. Classroom Support

Fun is in the Air for your Class! The “Catchbox” is on Board at HKU!

We are pleased to announce that the World’s first innovative throwable microphone “Catchbox” is now on board here at HKU to facilitate your teaching.

Whether you're hosting a large conference or a small workshop, a good atmosphere is everything. The Catchbox will lighten up the mood and get everybody talking. If teaching staff are interested in arranging a demonstration, please contact the LES team.

3. Performance and Event Support

We are pleased to announce that our event technical support services will now expand to Chong Yuet Ming Culture Centre including both Yuet Ming Auditorium and Studio 303.

Located at 5/F of Chong Yuet Ming Cultural Centre, the Yuet Ming Auditorium is a proscenium theatre with a capacity of 400 seats. The modern and well-equipped theatre supports the multi-purpose functions for drama, dance, live music, movie screening, conference and seminar.

The Yuet Ming Auditorium is equipped with the following Audio Visual and Theatrical Facilities: -

  • L/C/R Line Array Sound System
  • Video System
  • Projection System
  • Theatrical Lighting System
  • Stage Rigging System
  • Show Relay to Pre function areas and dressing Rooms

Studio 303

Located at 3/F of Chong Yuet Ming Cultural Centre, Studio 303 is a black box theatre aiming at supporting student’s cultural and arts development. The studio includes an auditorium with 148 seats, a scenery construction workshop and dressing room. This black box theatre is an ideal performing venue for experimental performances in varieties art forms like drama, dance, live music performance and theatrical workshop.

  • Video System
  • Projection System
  • Theatrical Lighting System
  • Show Relay to dressing Rooms and Scenery workshop

4. Media Production Support

Digital Literacy Skills Laboratory (DLS Laboratory)

The Digital Literacy Skills Laboratory located in the Chi Wah Learning Commons 2/F, Zone S is NOW IN SERVICE.Digital Literacy Skills Laboratory

The new facility provides space, equipment and technical support for students who are creating multi-media resources for their project work, etc.
