User Special Interest Group Meetings
To enhance user communication and information exchange among researchers and students using the central research computing facilities supported by ITS, we started organizing User Special Interest Group (USIG) meetings to offer a new communication platform for knowledge exchange among ITS colleagues and our users. The first meeting was conducted on 23 March 2016 for those working on or interested in Quantum Chemistry. Through this meeting, researchers can share their domain knowledge with each other and receive updates on the latest research computing facilitates supported by ITS. At the same time, we can understand more on the computing support needs of our research users. Similar meetings on different research areas will be arranged in the coming months.
More Software Available on HTC System
Further to our last issue of newsletter reported at http://www.its.hku.hk/news/news179/htc-update announcing the availability of a new High Throughput Computer (HTC) system for research computing, we are pleased to report that R and Python are now available for use under the system (see http://www.its.hku.hk/services/research/htc/usersoftwares for the list of software items available). From the system statistics of March 2016, more than 5,500 jobs have been completed using the HTC system. All the jobs can be executed within 24 hours after submission and almost all of them can be completed within 2 hours.
