Skype for Business 2015 Available for Staff Use

Skype for Business 2015 is now available for use by staff in departments on Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES).  Skype for Business (formerly Microsoft Office Communicator and Microsoft Lync) is a popular communication tool supporting a variety of communication ways and features that include-

  1. instant messaging
  2. showing the presence information of persons on the contact list
  3. audio and video communication (up to 5-party)
  4. file transmission
  5. desktop or applications sharing
  6. web conferences

To enable University staff to communicate with members in other sister institutions in Hong Kong using Skype for Business, we have also federated the Skype for Business 2015 service with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Lingnan University and The Hong Kong Institute of Education.  The University of Aberdeen in UK is also included in this federation.  Communication over Skype for Business can be started right away after a request to add a contact is sent and accepted.

To use Skype for Business 2015, staff members simply have to install a client agent on their PCs or Macs (available at http://www.its.hku.hk/documentation/guide/others/o365/skype-for-business2015) and install it according to the procedures described in the same webpage.  For mobile devices, the latest available version is Microsoft Lync 2013.

After successful installation of the client agent, staff can start using Skype after login with their HKU Portal UID and PIN.  The credentials to login Skype are synchronized with HKU Portal UID and PIN.  Whenever their HKU Portal UID/PIN is changed, the account name/password to access this Microsoft portal will be updated correspondingly.

In case you have questions in using Skype for Business, please feel free to contact our Service Desk at 3917 0123 or ithelp@hku.hk.
