Upgrade of Lecture Capture Service (LCS) Panopto and Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle

Lecture Capture Service (LCS) Panopto upgraded to version 4.9

The Lecture Capture Service (LCS) is a lecture capture system powered by Panopto.  It integrates with the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) and supports teachers and students to do video recording, play-back through Moodle courses, video editing/sharing, and inside-video search.

The latest version of Panopto 4.9 was released in June 2015.  With the help from the eLearning Enhancement Task Force (EETF) members, this latest version has been installed on the development platform for testing and evaluation for about a month with positive testing results.  The Panopto production system as well as the recorder software in all classroom PCs in the Centennial Campus had been upgraded to the latest version on July 20, 2015.

Besides, Panopto Unison that allows teachers to upload existing video archives for viewing by students in Moodle courses is also released. The user guide can be found at http://moodle-support.hku.hk/sites/moodle-support.hku.hk/files/pdf/Panopto_Userguide_Upload_video_files_with_Unison.pdf.  If you want to use Unison, please email to elearningteam@hku.hk.

Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle upgraded to version 2.8.6

The central Learning Management System was upgraded from version 2.63 to 2.86 successfully on July 26, 2015.   This new version comes with a collection of system fixes and improvements over the previous version (see https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.8.6_release_notes for details).

The first improvement to highlight is the addition of a new menu to show the four most commonly used learning activities including Assignment, Turnitin Assignment, Forum and File in the navigation bar on the left (Figure 1).  This new feature allows teachers to use their Moodle courses easily without going through the complete workflow from enabling the editing mode to selecting the desired learning activity on the long activity menu.

The second improvement is to enable two new course layouts namely Elegance and Essentials to allow teachers to change the look-and-feel of their courses.  The user guide can be found at “http://moodle-support.hku.hk/sites/moodle-support.hku.hk/files/pdf/HKU_Moodle_Course_Theme.pdf”.
