Launch of Experimental 3D Printing Service

We are pleased to announce the availability of a new 3D printing service for use by University staff and students starting from 1 September 2015.

This 3D printing service is offered on an experimental basis to facilitate us to understand the demand from University members on this modern printing technology and whether the supported printer can meet their common needs.  The service will be reviewed on a regular basis and users are welcome to give us their comments by sending to ithelp@hku.hk.

Printer Specification

The 3D printer to be launched is a Materializer 3D Printer from Printact which carries the following specification-

  • Printing Technology: Fused Deposition Modeling
  • Build Volume: 250mm diameter x 290mm height
  • Layer Resolution: 0.05 - 0.4mm
  • Positioning Precision: XYZ: 12 microns

How to Use

The 3D printing service is provided at Student Advisory Services Zone Counter, Level 2 of Chi Wah Learning Commons (SAS Zone Counter) and is served by Learning Environment Services (LES) of ITS.  Users can make an appointment online at http://booking.its.hku.hk/lebook/ and bring their file to print to the SAS Zone Counter during the booked session.  LES colleague will process the print job after checking the file format and advise users the estimated time and cost required for the print job.  Users will be notified by email when the printed object is ready for collection from the SAS Zone Counter.

The printing charge is calculated based on the time required to print the file. Users will be charged in advance by deducting the printing units (in the unit of HK$0.3) from their uPrint budget under their HKU Portal accounts.  Please click here for the service hours, charging scheme and guidelines on using this experimental 3D printing service in details.
