We are pleased to inform that a new WiFi service “HKU” will be made available for exclusive use by University staff and students starting from 6 July 2015 (Monday).
“HKU”, a new WiFi SSID (service set identifier), is designated for use by current staff and students. It is different from the existing SSIDs “Universities WiFi” or “eduroam” which support not only University staff and students but also members of other universities in HK as well as overseas institutions participating in the consortium “eduroam”.
The new WiFi network “HKU” gives a unique WiFi name that belongs to and represents the University. This segregation of WiFi network pools also enables us to apply different service levels and network policies among different groups of users using the campus network.
The changes associated with this new WiFi service launch are highlighted below-
- The new WiFi SSID “HKU” will be broadcasted within the University campus network starting from 6 July 2015 10 a.m. when all University staff and students can start using this new SSID. This SSID has no bandwidth capping.
- The SSIDs “Universities WiFi” and “eduroam” will remain on campus network (except in student residential halls) with a bandwidth capping for use by visitors from other universities in HK and overseas institutions who are eduroam participants.
- Residents in student residential halls are requested to use the SSID “HKU” from 6 July 2015 10 a.m. onwards. “Universities WiFi” and “eduroam” will be taken out from the hall network at the same time.
- The legacy SSID “CCWLAN” will be taken out from the campus network after 30 September 2015. The very few users who are still using this SSID are advised to switch using “HKU” as soon as possible after its launch date.
To use the new WiFi SSID “HKU”, staff and students using PCs running Windows 8.1, Macs or mobile devices are simply required to select the new SSID “HKU” and login with their HKU Portal UID/PIN. For those using non-Windows 8.1 PCs, they are requested to run the WiFi auto-configuration program available at http://www.its.hku.hk/documentation/guide/network/wifi/hkuwifi to complete the one-time configuration procedure. Users can refer to this webpage on the user guide for this new WiFi service.
The WiFi service “Wi-Fi.HK via HKU” for use by general visitors will remain unchanged.
As a gentle reminder, users please update their HKU Portal PIN stored at their mobile devices whenever the PIN is changed.
