Dr Danny Tang retired after his 3 years of service as the Director of IT Services on 30 April 2015. A farewell dinner was organized by colleagues of ITS on 30 April 2015 to thank Danny for his ITS leadership and contributions to the University. In the past three years, he took ITS through challenges with many accomplishments, including the following notable achievements-
Further developments of the Oracle/PeopleSoft Student Information System and Human Capital Management System after these systems were launched in 2010/11 following the completion of their initial implementations. Danny’s valuable advice on the developments had been instrumental in taking them forward with good progress.
The implementation of a new centralized learning management system (LMS), Moodle, as the only campus-wide LMS for the University in 2012, which also integrates with the central lecture capture system, Panopto, for enhancing the teaching and learning experience of both teachers and students.
A successful service transition after ITS assumed the new responsibilities to develop and manage the University’s central physical learning spaces, which comprise classrooms, lecture theatres and learning commons in the Main Campus and the Centennial Campus. Under Danny’s direction, ITS is providing a modern and technology-rich learning environment that facilitates individual and group communication, idea consolidation, collaboration and innovation.
The significant expansion of the University’s IT infrastructure along with the construction and opening of the Centennial Campus and new student residences to cater for the growth in demand for support from the double cohort of students starting from 2012/13.
The continuous enhancement of the High Performance Computing facilities at the University which included the successful bidding of a UDF grant for establishing a new High Performance Computing Cluster for scientific computation and the setup of a new High Throughput Computing platform for processing “embarrassingly parallel” problems launched in March 2014 by utilizing idle PC’s in central facilities.
The introduction and enforcement of University-wide information security measures and promoting the use of ITS Cloud among departments to strengthen information security protection across the University.
- The strengthening of ITS’ management capability and quality assurance through deploying international best practices for IT services management and project management; as well as setting and documenting a growing set of technical standards covering the technologies and solutions that ITS deploys. An internal Quality Management Committee is also formed to provide leadership to this effort.
We all wish Danny a happy retirement life with his family.
