The University is supporting the HKSAR Government’s “City-wide Wi-Fi for the Public and Visitors" initiative as set out in the “2014 Digital 21 Strategy”. The objectives of this initiative are
- to make it easier for the public and visitors to find and use the free Wi-Fi services in Hong Kong;
- to stimulate the development of public Wi-Fi in Hong Kong; and
- to further advance Hong Kong's position as a highly connected city in the world.
The WiFi.HK initiative is led by OGCIO (Office of the Government Chief Information Officer) and was officially launched in August 2014 when 3,000 WiFi access points are made ready for public use. For further details on Wi-Fi.HK service, please visit the Wi-Fi.HK website.
To support this initiative, ITS will convert the HKU OpenWiFi service into WiFi.HK service. The major change arising from this conversion is that the WiFi SSID (Service Set Identifier) for use by visitors on campus will be changed from “HKU OpenWiFi” to “Wi-Fi.HK via HKU”. We will announce the details later when the service is ready to roll out, tentatively in early December 2014.
