Message from the Director - 2014 ITS Planning Workshop

A 2-day ITS Planning Workshop was held in the Medical Alumni Chamber of the Faculty of Medicine Building on 12 and 13 June 2014.  In this Workshop, senior staff members of the department gathered together to review the progress of the projects initiated last year, and more importantly, to discuss and consider new initiatives proposed for implementation in the next 12 to 18 months.

We were delighted to have Dr. Steven Cannon, Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance) with us on 12 June to kick off the Workshop.  Dr. Cannon gave an opening remark on “The Future University: Reflections, Challenges and Values”.  He started off by highlighting some of the changes the tertiary education sector in the United Kingdom had experienced in the past, and moved on to discuss the challenges that the University was facing and some possible solutions to the challenges.   Dr. Cannon’s sharing gave the workshop attendees lots of food for thought.

In the Workshop, each Section Head led a 3-hour session to report on the progress of the projects initiated in last year’s workshop and present for discussion the new initiatives proposed for the coming year.  A total of twelve initiatives were critically reviewed in those two days.  The proposals covered the establishment of an enterprise data model and catalog for administrative systems; enhancement of HKU App functions and standards; version control system for be-spoken administrative applications; enhancing learning environment services support through technology and training; integrated communications for users; means of expanding research computing resources; mitigating information security risks in BYOD proliferation; quality management system for ITS; future data centres development; network monitoring mechanism; and system security enhancement.

All the proposed initiatives were well thought out, and attracted lots of useful exchanges among attendees.  I am glad to report that we had a very fruitful 2-day workshop.  The proposed initiatives will be prioritized in July for implementation based on their relative merits and resource requirements.
