Updates on the Moodle Learning Management System

We are pleased to update readers on some new developments on the University’s Moodle Learning Management System.

Moodle Upgraded to Version 2.4.4

The University’s Moodle system was upgraded to the latest Version 2.4.4 on 4 August 2013.   The new version comes with a collection of system fixes and improvements (http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.4.4_release_notes) over the previous Version 2.3.1. One notable new feature of this new version is its capability to automatically detect a user’s device type and render a suitable theme layout for viewing the learning content and functions on smartphones and tablets via a browser.

Turnitin Upgraded and New Plugins Added

Along with the version upgrade, we have also upgraded the Turnitin plugin to the latest release to achieve a better integration of it with Moodle, and added the following new ones - 

  • Course Content Block
  • Course Menu Block
  • Portfolio
  • Outcome
  • Upload file in Wiki
  • Allow theme changes in URL
  • DragMath
  • PDF submission
  • PDF feedback
  • Participation Map

Student Photo and Information Page

Besides adopting plugins contributed by the Moodle community, we have also developed our own new “Student Information and Photo” plugin to show for each course, students’ basic information, enrollment status and photos for viewing by teachers of the course. The course enrollment status of a student, which can either be “Approved” or “Pending”, would be useful information to the course teachers, particularly during the add/drop period at the beginning of a new semester.

Suggestions for Moodle are Welcome

You are welcome to contributing your ideas, such as new plugins that you consider useful, to the development of Moodle.   In order to do that, please enroll yourself to the eLearning Enhancement Task Force (EETF) Moodle Site by following the steps below -

  1. Go to http://moodle.hku.hk
  2. Click on “Courses” in the navigation menu on the left hand side of the page.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and type “elearning” in the search box.
  4. The search results will include “EETF eLearning Enhancement Task Force [2012]”
  5. Click on the course title.
  6. You will be asked to log in to the HKU Portal.
  7. After enrollment, you may participate in discussions, viewing news, and adding new suggestions or comments in forums.
