Information Security Awareness Exhibition 2013

With the advancement of IT, you can access the Internet almost anywhere using a variety of desktop and mobile devices.  Have you ever considered what are the risks involved in exchanging information or carrying out business transactions over the Internet?

To promote the awareness of the University community on the importance of information security, ITS held the “Information Security Awareness Exhibition 2013” at the Run Run Shaw Podium from 18 to 22 March 2013.  Visitors to the exhibition booth could find a lot of useful information on how to protect their sensitive or confidential information and personal data in the Internet world. They were also invited to participate in an online quiz which focused on the following five areas related to information security:

  1. Personal Data Protection
  2. Cyber Security
  3. Phishing
  4. Mobile security
  5. USB storage

336 participants participated in the quiz and 50% of them attained a full mark.  The score distribution is shown in Table 1 and the pie chart (Chart 1).

A Lunch Time Seminar was also held on 20 March.  Mr. Otto Wong, Officer-in-charge of the Technology Crime Prevention Unit of the Hong Kong Police Force was invited as the guest speaker to share his views on “Cyber Crime Trend”.  The seminar was very well received with about 50 participants.

Along with the Exhibition, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data ("PCPD") and the University Data Protection Officer co-organized the University Privacy Campaign on 18-19 March to raise the awareness among students and staff members regarding personal data protection, the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the new amendments to the Ordinance passed by the Legislative Council last year, and data protection principles and practical tips to protect privacy.  Two seminars were held, one for staff and the other for students. The number of participants were around 100 and 50 respectively.
