The 2011-2012 Information Technology Services (ITS) Annual Report has been posted on ITS website at http://www.its.hku.hk/about/annual-report. The report gives a good summary of how we contribute to the University’s mission and strategic priorities. The executive summary provides an overview of the major achievements and developments we have made in the reported year.
2011-2012 was a year of consolidation and refinement following the successful launching of the Oracle/PeopleSoft Student Information System; the Human Capital Management System; and the Enterprise Portal in 2010-2011. The University’s IT infrastructure was upgraded as a continuous effort, and further expanded in phases along with the construction of the Centennial Campus and the Lung Wah Street Residential Colleges. We also made significant progress in our quality journey through adoption of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) for IT services management, and establishment of a Project Management Office.
It was also a significant year, with new responsibilities rested on us in the University’s pursuit for excellence in teaching and learning. In the virtual (or digital) e-learning space, we embarked on a project to deploy Moodle as the University’s new learning management system, complete with a wide variety of training and support services. In April 2012, the Centre assumed new responsibilities to develop and manage the University’s central physical learning spaces, which comprise classrooms, lecture theatres and learning commons in the Main Campus and the Centennial Campus. Our combined role with respect to both the virtual and physical learning spaces goes well beyond that of a custodian of systems and facilities, but requires us to develop and sustain an inspiring, vibrant and technology-rich learning environment that facilities individual and group communication, idea consolidation, collaboration and innovation.
As we approach the end of 2012, may I take this opportunity to wish all colleagues and students a Merry X’mas and a prosperous 2013.
Director, Information Technology Services
