Progress Updates on Network Setup in Centennial Campus and Student Residential Halls at Lung Wah Street

1. Centennial Campus

As reported in issue No. 156 of ITS News, the implementation of the campus network for the three new buildings in Centennial Campus had been completed successfully on time for moving in of the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences.

Our Network Team is now focusing on wired and wifi network connectivity in classrooms, lecture theatres and the Learning Commons in the lower floors of Centennial Campus for completion in early September for the start of the upcoming new academic year.  In addition, a new Internet link, with guaranteed bandwidth of 200Mbps, had been set up at Centennial Campus for coping with a projected higher demand on Internet usage due to increase in number of staff and students.

2. Student Residential Colleges on Lung Wah Street

Progresses are being made in setting up the network infrastructure for the Student Residential Colleges on Lung Wah Street.  Network equipment installation (both LAN and WiFi network) has been underway in Block A and Block B since July 2012, and the progress is satisfactory so far. Although the handover of equipment closets and cabling work was delayed slightly and the installation of fiber cabling infrastructure is still underway, network equipment installation is being expedited to catch up with the schedule.

A 1Gbps WAN connection connecting the Residential Colleges to the Main Campus was installed successfully, and is now ready for service.

The next target of the project is to finish installation of network and IP telephones  in the hall office areas.  It is expected that Block C and Block D will also be ready for our network installation soon.
