Three-Year Tender for Desktop & Laptop Personal Computers and Pre-installed Disk Image for Departmental Staff PCs

    1. Introduction
    2. Pre-installed disk image for departmental staff PCs

1. Introduction

Computer Centre has arranged a three-year tender for desktop and laptop PCs to facilitate departments in ordering PCs throughout the tender period among a standardized range of PC models.  The tender prices and details of the selected vendors are available under HKU Portal at https://hkuportal.hku.hk (=> Services tab => Computer Centre Services => Tender Prices => PC Products).

Regular price updates will be carried out in about 6-month intervals and departments can take into account this price update arrangement in their PC procurement plan. The next updates are scheduled in December 2010 and June 2011, and the updated offers will be posted up under HKU Portal as mentioned above.

2. Pre-installed disk image for departmental staff PCs

In line with this new PC tender arrangement, we are pleased to inform that a new service is offered to departments who are now subscribing to Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA).  Whenever they are ordering PCs under the above tender, they can opt for pre-installation of a standard disk image running Windows 7 Enterprise edition (32-bit or 64-bit) which will join the central Windows domain.  The standard disk image can save the effort of a colleague with a central Microsoft Exchange Email account in configuring Microsoft Outlook email client, and by making use of the central Windows software distribution server, software such as Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Office and Windows Update can be installed to the PCs more easily.  In future, it is our plan to enable departments to make use of the central Windows domain service in managing their departmental printers and integrate the connected computers into the Unified Communications (UC) services offered by Microsoft Office Communications Server or Lync Server for Enterprise voice, instant messaging and audio/video/web conferencing.
