Training News

The following are the training courses arranged by the Computer Center till September 2005 to help our staff and students learn how to use the various software and services.  Most courses are open to HKU staff and students free of charge.  Some courses are provided by a course vendor and a fee is charged for these courses (e.g. the Microsoft Office series and other PC software). Click on the course number to see the description of each course.

Computer Centre Orientation

Orientation Course on Introduction to Computer Centre Services

This course will give an introduction on the wide range of computer and network services of Computer Centre .  After attending this course, you will understand more about the scope and types of our services which should be valuable resources to facilitate your study and work at the University.

Orientation Workshop on PC and Network Services of Computer Centre

You are encouraged to attend the workshop after attending the above introductory course in order to get hands-on experience in using the PC and network services offered by Computer Centre .

Courses on E-mail and HKU Portal Services

Introduction to Email and Computer Virus

This is a 2-hour course on using Email in HKU and how to prevent computer virus.  It covers:

                    - the concepts of email client and serverl
                    - email programs in HKU environment
                    - configuring an email client
                    - managing the disk quota on the server
                    - filtering spam mail on the server
                    - avoid catching computer virus in reading email

Introduction to HKU Portal and HKUESD

This is a 2-hour workshop on concepts of the HKU Portal and HKUESD systems and on how to use these services.

The HKU Portal is a web-based interface to the computer services and information provided by the University. You can access web-based email, the HKU Libraries' resources, on-line courses, teaching and learning resources, personal records, administrative data, research information and other on-line services provided by various departments with a single sign-on using your HKU Portal UID (user identification).

The HKUESD services are web-based applications where you sign electronically with your HKU digital certificate (HKU-Cert). Digital signatures, based on public key infrastructure (PKI), provide reliable authentication and assure data integrity. (Note: please bring your "HKU-Cert CD" to the workshop if you have one.)

This workshop will cover the following topics:

1. Introduction to concepts of the HKU Portal
2. Visiting the HKU Portal and customising your own portal services
3. Introduction to concepts of PKI and ESD
4. Visiting the HKUESD applications and using your HKU-Cert

In this workshop, the Student Connect system and the web-based applications for staff will be highlighted.

This is a course on the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) for Windows PC. Users will learn how to read the input data as well as to perform some simple statistical analysis. Contents include:

Web Page Editing with FrontPage

This is a 3-hour course workshop on HTML Editing using Microsoft FrontPage. In this workshop, students would be doing the following exercises:

- Create a document, try colors, fonts, bullets lists etc.

Exercise 2

- Create targets and hyperlinks

Exercise 3

- Create a table

Exercise 4

- Using image files in your document

Exercise 5

- Uploading your document to the server

Pre-requisite: Attendants must have the HKUSUA computer account.

Introduction to Unix

This is a 3-hour introductory course for users with little or no Unix experience.  The course will cover the Unix computing environment, the Unix file system, the editor, email, disk quota allocations and commonly used Unix commands.

Courses on Parallel Programming

Parallel Programming with workshop


This course is suitable for researchers and their assistants who need to run programs with very long execution time. By parallelizing and executing the program in a computer cluster environment, the execution time may be reduced significantly, for example, from 2 days to 2 hours. Students must have programming experience in either C or Fortran.

The course is designed for our HKUHPCC Linux environment which consists of a PC-cluster of 356 CPUs (178 nodes of dual CPU architecture).  For technical details on HKUHPCC cluster, please refer to: http://www.its.hku.hk/ccsystem/hkuhpcc.

    Some courses are organised in conjunction with a course vendor.  There is a nominal charge on the courses.

    For courses requiring a fee, please send payment to Computer Centre as soon as you have registered on the web, otherwise your registration is considered invalid.

    Payment can be made by either:

    • cheque (payable to "The University of Hong Kong"), or
    • through departmental requisition (for applicants supported by departments) as either of the following:

    Once accepted, the fee is not refundable.  However, substitution of participant is possible by written notification to the Centre.

    Computer Centre reserves the right to cancel the courses if there is insufficient enrollment.  Applicants will be notified by email or telephone of the course cancellation and all course fees collected will be refunded in full.
     

    4. The maximum number of participants for a course:
