Site Licensing Arrangement on Anti-virus Software

    1. Site licensing programs on anti-virus software
    2. Acquiring new licenses

1. Site licensing programs on anti-virus software

In June 2004, we informed departments that the renewal fee for the Norton Anti-virus (NAV) products for 2004/05 was substantially increased by 5 to 6 times than that of 2003/2004.  In view of this drastic price increase, Computer Centre conducted a tender exercise last year.  As a result of this tender, Sophos Anti-virus (SAV) which was also a popular anti-virus product was recommended as a much more economical alternative to NAV software and more than 70 departments had changed to use SAV.  Positive feedbacks were received from these user departments in using this new anti-virus software.

Computer Centre has just completed a new tender exercise for the NAV products.  The renewal and initial fees for the desktop/server for 2005/2006 have been increased by 30% and 10% respectively as compared with those of 2004/2005 for the same purchase quantity.  Departments subscribing Norton Anti-virus or Ghost products through the site-licensing program of Computer Centre should have already received the renewal notice and the fee schedule for 2005/2006.

We can now note that price difference between the NAV and SAV software packages are substantial.  Computer Centre would therefore advise departments which are still using NAV to consider seriously to switch to the use of SAV as a substantial amount of budget could be saved.  For the latest price information on the SAV, NAV and Ghost software, please login HKU Portal and follow the steps of navigation of: "Services" tab =>  "Computer Centre Services" => "Tender Prices".

2. Acquiring new licenses

Departments interested in acquiring new licenses of SAV, NAV or Ghost products through Computer Centre can submit a CC Order Form to the Centre through the HKU Portal ("Services" tab => "Computer Centre Services" =>  "Order License and Goods" and complete the transaction using your HKU digital certificate (HKU-Cert)).  As an alternative, departments can also complete and return the paper version of the CC Order Form (CF-36) available at http://www.its.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm
