IMSL Libraries Installed on the HPCPOWER Cluster

1. IMSL Libraries now available on the HPCPOWER system

We are pleased to announce that the IMSL (International Mathematical and Statistical Libraries) has been installed on the HPCPOWER system since May 1, 2005 through a transfer of the software license from the old HKUHPCC system to the much more powerful HPCPOWER system.  IMSL is a comprehensive mathematical and statistical program libraries for high performance computing applications.  This development will enable our users who require the IMSL for running their high-performance computing (HPC) programs on the 356-processor HPCPOWER system.  As a result of the license transfer, IMSL is no longer supported on the HKUHPCC system.

2. Program speed-up on the HPCPOWER system

In using IMSL on the HPCPOWER system, users have to use the Intel FORTRAN compiler instead of the PGI FORTRAN compiler as it was required on the old HKUHPCC system.  We are also pleased to report that all user programs requiring the use of IMSL previously run on the old HKUHPCC system are found to be running at least 4 times faster after they are ported to run on the HPCPOWER system.  For instance, by porting a user program (using IMSL) from the old HKUHPCC system to the HPCPOWER system with more extensive use of parallel processing, the time for running the program to its completion has significantly been reduced from more than a week to less than 2 hours.

Users who are interested to parallelize their programs on the HPCPOWER system for faster performance can contact the undersigned.
