Welcome to HKU HKU Portal Services ICT for Supporting Teaching and Learning HKU Campus Network High Performance Computation (HPC) Support Our Assistance
Computer Centre provides a comprehensive range of quality and advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services to facilitate our University members in their teaching, learning, research and administration activities. Make sure that you visit our website to find out more about our services. I shall give a short introduction on our major services here for your information.
The HKU Portal provides a user-friendly and easy-to-access interface through which University members can access all the centrally-provided ICT services, including electronic mail, Intranet services, web-based administrative applications, web-based courses and HKU Electronic Services Delivery (HKUESD) applications, through our high-speed campus network. With a personalized and customizable portal interface, users are free to choose the types of information they wish to receive and the format to display the information at their own choices under the HKU Portal.
Computer Centre has also developed the web-based University Information System (UIS) and Student Connect system, accessible via the HKU Portal, to provide our teachers and students with comprehensive management information. The UIS supports all administrative applications including human resources, finance, student records and alumni information while the Student Connect enables students to select courses, enquire course/examination timetables, examination results and hall accommodation information, and to change personal particulars. These two systems provide up-to-date information which helps our staff and students in their daily teaching and learning activities.
A popular web-based electronic course platform, WebCT, has been set up since 1998 to support interactive web-based teaching and learning over the network. The WebCT platform has gained popular use among the teachers over the years. At present, more than 1,000 WebCT courses are set up by our teachers. Regular induction courses and training workshops on the use of multimedia design software and web page authoring tools are organized by our Centre for teachers to acquaint themselves with the related IT skills. Last year, two more learning platforms, namely the ILN (Interactive Learning Network) and the SOUL (SPACE Online Universal Learning) systems, have also been made available for use.
Computer Centre has also developed extensive web-based applications for general use by staff and students. An innovative HKUESD (HKU Electronic Services Delivery) platform has been developed to deploy the use of digital signature based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology to provide secure and authenticated online transactions. Numerous applications and services for central administrative offices are set up under the HKUESD platform, including applications for annual leave, booking of amenities facilities, etc. Staff and students are given free HKU digital certificates to facilitate their use of digital signatures when they are issued with a staff or student smart card on joining the University.
The HKU campus network is also connected directly to other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong through HARNET (the Hongkong Academic and Research NETwork). A 300 Mbps link connects the HKU network to HARNET, which in turn is connected to the global Internet via a 155Mbps ISP link and to Internet sites in Hong Kong via a 1Gbps link through HKIX (the Hong Kong Internet Exchange). At present, we are working closely with HARNET in upgrading its global Internet link from the speed of 155Mbps to 240Mbps. This project is expected to be completed in about a month's time. Furthermore, two 155Mps links connect HARNET to China's CERNET (China Education and Research Network) and Taiwan's TANET (Taiwan Academic Network) respectively. Another dedicated 45 Mbps link is established and connects HARNET to the Internet2, which is a collaborative effort of over 200 universities in U.S.A. working in partnership with industry and government to support advanced Internet technologies and applications development for academic applications and research. The Internet2 connection provides a resourceful channel for the University staff to enhance their research collaborations with other academics on a global scale.
Other high performance servers in Computer Centre include a Compaq 64-CPU parallel PC cluster which has the theoretical peak processing power of over 75 Giga-FLOPS. Two new systems are under installation. They are a HP rp8420 system for supporting general academic computing and universtiy-wide network communications and a Windows HPC cluster for the development of high-performance computing applications based on the Microsoft Windows platform. Another powerful 24-node SUN SunFire 6800 system has been installed since 2002 to support bioinformatics research through a collaboration with the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre and the funding support from the HKSAR Government Innovation and Technology Fund. This server provides the most up-to-date nucleotide and protein databases and many useful software tools that are needed in bioinformatics research and studies.
I hope you will enjoy using our services and facilities.
