The upgrade included the installation of a new server hkuap.hku.hk (an IBM p-series 630 server) to replace the old hkuap3 and hkuap4 servers (IBM RS6000/F50 servers), the upgrade of Oracle to version 9i with Unicode Chinese character set support, and the changes of all related application software to use the newer version of Oracle.SAN storage system with redundant connections. This provides a more efficient and flexible allocation of disk space on needs basis and improves the storage availability through the use of redundant SAN connections. Since the system was upgraded, we have observed very notable improvements in overall performance of the University's central administrative computer applications.
