In our last issue of Computer News, we mentioned that an upgrade for the network connection between HARNET (Hongkong Academic Research Network) and CERNET (China Education and Research Network) was underway. We are now pleased to announce that this project of upgrading the HARNET-CERNET link from 2 Mbps to 155 Mbps is close to completion. On February 23, 2003, the 155Mbps HARNET-CERNET link was first established and it is now under acceptance tests. Once this link is put into production service, expectedly on March 1, 2004, the performance of network communications between institutions of Hong Kong and those of China Mainland should be greatly improved.
This upgrade marks a new milestone in the cooperations between HARNET and CERNET of providing advanced network connectivity for fostering and supporting more and closer academic and research collaborations between the academia of Hong Kong and China Mainland. We would like thank the Network Task Force of JUCC (Joint Universities Information Technology Services) and the project group of CERNET for their great effort in bringing up the much enhanced network facility smoothly and on time.
