1. Login the new VPC box before data migration
Login the new VPC box with your HKU Portal UID/PIN. A Personal Home Drive (H:) will be automatically created on your VPC. This is the drive for storing your data files on the VPC and you can copy the data from your desktop PC to this drive.
2. Copy data from current desktop PC to VPC
- Switch to your desktop PC. Click “File Explorer” at the bottom of the task bar.
- Type “\\home.vpc.hku.hk\home”
- In the pop-up window “Windows Security”, type User Name: hkucc-com.hku.hk\yourPortalUID Password: yourPortalPIN
- The File Explorer will show the following path which indicates you are ready to copy the data from your desktop PC to the VPC.
- To copy the data from your desktop PC, click “File Explorer” at the bottom of the task bar.
- Select the folders/files you wish to copy from your desktop PC (e.g. D:\Files) > right click > select “Copy”.
- Select Personal Home (H:) > right click and select “Paste”. You can create a new folder to store your data.
- Please repeat the above steps for each folder that you wish to copy from your desktop PC to H: on the VPC.
3. Copy bookmarks from desktop PC to VPC
A. Microsoft Edge
- At the top right corner of Microsoft Edge, click (a) Favorites > (b) “3-dot button” > (c) Export favorites.
- Select “Personal Home (H:)” from your desktop PC.
- Save the file with a name “bookmark.htm” > click “Save”.
B. Chrome
- At the top right corner of Chrome, please click (a) “3-dot button” > (b) “Bookmarks” > (c) “Bookmark manager”.
- Click the “3-dot button” at the end of the blue menu bar > click “Export bookmarks”.
- Select (a) “Personal Home H:” from your desktop PC > (b) change the file name to chrome_bookmarks_(date) > (c) “Save”.
C. Firefox
- At the top right corner of FireFox, please click (a)“Favorites” > (b) “Bookmarks” > and (c) “Show All Bookmarks”.
- Click (a) “Import and Backup”> (b) “Export Bookmarks to HTML…. “.
- Select (a) “Personal Home H:” from your desktop PC > (b) change the file name to “firefix_bookmarks” > (c) “Save”.
4. Paste bookmarks to new VPC
A. Microsoft Edge
- Switch to your new VPC box. At the top right of Microsoft Edge, click (a) “Favorites” > (b) “3-dot button” > and (c) “Import favorites”.
- Click “down arrow” > Select “Favorites or bookmarks HTML file”.
- Click “Choose file”.
- Click (a) “Personal Home H:” on your new VPC > (b) “Edge bookmarks.html” > and (c) “Open”.
B. Chrome
- Switch to your new VPC Box. At the top right corner of Chrome, please click (a) “3-dot button” > (b) “Bookmarks” > (c) “Bookmark manager”.
- Under Bookmark manager page, please click the “3-dot button” at the end of blue menu bar > click “Import bookmarks”.
- Select “Personal Home H:” on your VPC > click file name chrome_bookmarks_(date) > “Open”.
- The imported bookmarks will be shown under “Imported” and “Bookmarks bar”.
C. Firefox
- Click WiFi icon at the top and select Universities via Y5ZONE.
- An alert message on a not-trusted certificate may display.
- Click Continue button to bypass the alert message.
- Your computer will be connected to the Universities via Y5ZONE wireless network.
- Switch to your new VPC Box. At the top right corner of FireFox, please click (a) “Favorites” > (b) “Bookmark” > (c) “Show All Bookmarks”.
- Click “Import and Backup”> “Import Bookmarks from HTML…”.
- Click (a) “Personal Home H:” on your new VPC box > (b) “firefox_ bookmarks.htm” > (c) ”Open”.
- All imported bookmarks will be shown under “Bookmarks Menu”.
