Procedure to Access HKU Email Outside Campus Network via Authenticated SMTP Service (for Roaming Users)

Procedure to Access HKU Email Outside Campus Network via Authenticated SMTP Service (for Roaming Users)

If staff and students are outside HKU campus network and the email program on their PCs (e.g. Outlook, Windows Mail) is configured to use “mail.hku.hk” as the outgoing SMTP server, they may have problems sending email because “mail.hku.hk” does not support open-relay of email from PCs outside HKU network.  For such case, they can set outgoing SMTP server to “smtproam.hku.hk”.  HKU Portal UID and PIN will be asked for sending mail.

Important Notes:

  1. The above-mentioned authenticated SMTP service is available for use by HKU staff and students only.

For graduates using graduate.hku.hk, please click here.

For graduates using HKU Connect email service, please click here.

  2. The above setup only works if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not block outgoing SMTP calls (i.e. not blocking TCP port no. 587).
