End of Support for Windows Vista on April 11, 2017

To: List C

Dear Colleagues,

Microsoft has announced that Windows Vista will go out of support on 11 April 2017.   End of support means Windows Vista users will no longer receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft.

Since running unsupported and unpatched products are vulnerable to security risks, please take appropriate action to upgrade the PCs in your department if they are still running Windows Vista as soon as possible before the end of support date.   For more details on the end of support announcement, please visit Microsoft’s webpage at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet.

To mitigate the risk of hacking by leveraging Windows Vista's security vulnerabilities, all Windows Vista machines must be removed from the campus network latest by 31 July 2017.  Requests for exemption will not be considered except for very exceptional circumstances.

If your department has subscribed to the Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions through us, all PCs owned by your department can enjoy upgrade to the latest versions of Windows.  You may visit http://www.its.hku.hk/services/procurement/software/license#microsoft for more information.    In case your department needs to order new PCs, you can also refer to our tender for desktop/notebook PCs (Tender No. 32185) under HKU Portal (type “tender” in the Search field and click the link “Tender Prices”).

In case you have any questions on the above, please feel to contact us at ithelp@hku.hk.
