2016 ITS Planning Workshop

A 2-day ITS Planning Workshop was held on 8 and 9 November 2016.  In this Workshop, senior staff members of the department gathered together to attend an array of fruitful activities.  These include a panel discussion on how IT can enable a thriving HKU vision, a review on the achievements and progress of the major initiatives of ITS, two vision talks on the development in Qianhai, China and Smart City development in Hong Kong and a discussion on the future plans of ITS to see how they align with the University’s vision and strategy for implementation in the coming few years.

We were delighted to have Professor Peter Mathieson, President and Vice-Chancellor to give an opening address who highlighted the University’s vision for 2016-2025 and the importance of information technology as one of the University’s enabling platforms to provide professional and operational support to accomplish the vision of “Asia’s Global University” for the next decade.

The President shared his views on the

A panel discussion on “The IT environment for a thriving HKU vision” was arranged following the opening address.  It was a valuable opportunity to have invited Dr. Steven Cannon, Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance), Miss Jeannie Wong, Director of Human Resources and Mr K L Tam, Director of Estates as the panel members to share with us their IT needs and how IT can help to modernize and excel their business processes and operations to assist them in playing the important role of an enabling platform for a thriving HKU vision.  The sharing gave the workshop attendees lots of food for thought on the upcoming developments and directions of ITS.

Two vision talks on “Disrupted or Being Disrupted – Surviving in the Internet+ Era” and “Smart City” were delivered by Dr Witman Hung, JP, Principal Liaison Officer for HK, Shenzhen Qianhai Authority and President, Internet Professional Association and Mr Eric Yeung, Chairman of Hong Kong Software Industry Association and Vice Chairman of the Internet Professional Association respectively.  These two talks aroused the interests of the attendees in the fast IT development in the Qianhai area and the progress of smart city development in Hong Kong compares with other parts of the world.

The final part of the workshop was an open discussion on the future plans of ITS.  It was riding on the HKU Vision 2016-2025 and was actively participated by attendees through which new ideas were generated and merited more deliberations.  The proposed ideas and suggestions will be further looked into and taken into consideration when outlining the upcoming development plans of ITS.
