The Annual Report of Information Technology Services 2015-2016 is now accessible on our website at http://www.its.hku.hk/about/annual-report.
Providing high-quality IT services and support is always our commitment to all users of the University. To summarize our works done and the progress made in 2015-16, the annual report has been prepared for reporting our efforts to enhance the central IT infrastructure and services of the University.
To enhance student learning experience, a brand new Digital Literacy Skills Laboratory (DLSL) was built within the Chi Wah Learning Commons to provide facilities for video production with on-site technical support service available. The e-learning (Moodle) management system has been continually upgraded by adding new functions to facilitate teaching and learning. We organised the Teaching & Learning Showcase Exhibition to highlight the uses of technology in education.
Supporting the University’s cutting-edge research projects, the state-of-the-art 104 TFLOP high-performance computing (HPC) system has been put into use since October 2015. It consists of the most advanced hardware and software technologies that could help researchers extend their research capabilities/strategies and exploit new research frontier.
We are also very pleased to report that our efforts in web accessibility and usability was again recognised in the Web Accessibility Recognition Scheme 2016 that was co-organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the Equal Opportunities Commission. The ITS website received a Gold Award for the third year, and the eLearning support website received a Gold Award for the second year.
The University’s business systems, including the Student Information System (SIS) and the Human Capital Management System (HCMS), have undergone a number of enhancements to align with new business needs as well as to improve their functionalities and user-friendliness. HCMS has been improved in services functionality and user-friendliness. Some of the functions of SIS were improved, e.g. students’ admission, hall application, examination results, etc. The completion of Smart Card Upgrade Project successfully upgraded and standardized over 1,600 departmental smartcard access control systems. The new Smart Card Issuance System was implemented for the production of new HKU 7-byte smart cards.
The University-wide network has been continuously enhanced and upgraded in main campuses and remote campuses for achieving better coverage and performance. New WiFi service “HKU” was launched to serve the growing need of HKU staff and students with additional WiFi access points installed. The upgrade of staff Exchange mail platform was completed that contributed to a successful integration of HKU mail systems. To enhance security protection of the campus network from cyber security threats, 2-factor authentication was implemented for strengthening the login protection in accessing HKU Virtual Private Network. Moreover, we embarked on implementing Information Rights Management (IRM) solution for protection of sensitive data by email transmission. To comply with Data Protection Principle 4 under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the objective of the University-wide Data Leakage Prevention (DLP) Project was successfully completed to have full installation of DLP software on all HKU staff PCs by end 2015.
For the organization management within ITS aiming at the provision of quality IT services to the University community, we continued to enhance the quality management process through the formulation of ITS policies and standards of practices and adoption of established professional standards.
As the end of 2016 is approaching, may I take this opportunity to wish all colleagues and students a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
