The following are the training courses arranged in coming months to help our staff and students to learn how to use the various software and services. Most courses are open to HKU staff and students free of charge. Some courses are provided by a course vendor and a fee is charged for these courses (e.g. the Microsoft Office series and other PC software). This one-hour training course is designed for faculty members, teacher, course instructor and eLearning technical support staff who would like to learn how to use Moodle to create course web sites. Participants will learn how to build a basic site containing course content and collaborative activities.

Topics include:
•introduction to eLearning environment in HKU
•understanding the process of enabling your Moodle courses
•understanding methods of enrolling students, teachers and guess for your course
•choosing the format and initial settings for a new site
•uploading basic content files
•adding web links to external sites
•creating content within Moodle using the built-in HTML editor
•linking a YouTube embedded video
•examining and creating various types of discussion forums
•organizing content and adjusting site layout

Prerequisites:
Familiarity with using a web browser

Topics include:
•creating and releasing assignments
•returning submitted work for revision
•reviewing submissions
•entering grades and comments for assignments
•creating and editing questions
•incorporating customized question feedback
•creating and releasing quizzes
•using the Choice tool to create simple polls
•working with random question sets
•altering quiz content and updating scores
•viewing submissions and giving feedback to students
•overriding quiz grades and resetting attempts
•reviewing item analysis to analyze the efficacy of individual questions

[MOD-003] Moodle Training Course on Grades (1 hour)

This one-hour training course is intended for faculty members, course designers and eLearning technical support staff who would like to learn about Moodle's grading features. Participants will learn how to set up and manage grades, enter and change grades for various activities, and use scales for providing non-numeric qualitative feedback.

Topics include:
•entering and editing grades and feedback
•adding new columns to the gradebook
•using categories for managing and calculating grade items
•deciding on aggregation type and setting up weighted grading
•creating custom scales for feedback
•releasing or hiding grades from students
•exporting and importing grades

[MOD-004] Moodle Training Course on Collaboration Tools (1 hour)

This one-hour training course is for faculty members, instructors, course developers and eLearning technical support staff who would like to explore collaborative uses of Moodle beyond forums and glossaries. Participants will review, create, and manage group activities, polls, public collections of users' entries, and collaboratively authored web pages (i.e., wikis, blogs).

Topics include:
•creating groups and working with group activities
•using the Database tool to build publicly searchable collections of user entries
•utilizing peer comment and review within the Database tool
•using wikis for collaborative authoring of web pages
•using Wikis and Blogs
•using Moodle messages

[MOD-005] Moodle Hands – on Training Course on Turnitin (1 hour)

This one-hour hands-on training course is for teachers and eLearning support staff who would like to explore the anti-plagiarism tool Turnitin on Moodle. Participants will have hands-on experience on creating a Turnitin Assignment with different options, generating and viewing originality reports, grading and adding feedback on Turnitin Assignments.

Topics include:
• Creating a Turnitin assignment
• Advanced checking and storing settings for Turnitin Assignment
• Viewing the Originality Report
• Setting the submission dates of Turnitin Assignment
• Viewing the Turnitin submission inbox
• Grading and adding feedback on Turnitin Assignment
• Other settings for Turnitin Assignment

Prerequisites:
Moodle Hands-on Training Course on Setting up a Moodle Course Website

This course is suitable for researchers and their assistants who need to run programs with very long execution time. By parallelizing and executing the program in a computer cluster environment, the execution time may be reduced significantly, for example, from 2 days to 2 hours. Students must have programming experience in either C or Fortran.

The course is designed for our HKUHPCC Linux environment which consists of a PC-cluster of 356 CPUs (178 nodes of dual CPU architecture). For technical details on HKUHPCC cluster, please refer to: http://www.its.hku.hk/ccsystem/hkuhpcc.

PV-WAVE is a software that provides an integrated comprehensive visual data analysis environment to analyze/present scientific data in various graphical formats. The software is currently available on the Linux and Microsoft Windows platform, and is supplied by Visual Numerics, the company that also supplies the well-known scientific library IMSL (International Mathematical and Statistical Libraries)

In this course, the capability and fundamental concept of the software will be highlighted. File input and output, simple 2-D and 3-D visualization, together with other topics including animated picture show and programming within PV-WAVE will also be discussed.

Matlab is an integrated computing environment for numeric computation and visualization. This 3-hour seminar will give an introduction on using Matlab in numerical analysis, matrix computation and graphics etc.

In this 1 day workshop, user will learn how to create professional-quality and engaging simulations, scenario-based training, and robust quizzes without programming knowledge or multimedia skills.

Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail or telephone at least one week before the commencement of the course.

Some courses are organised in conjunction with a course vendor. There is a fee charged on these courses. For courses requiring a fee, please send payment to Computer Centre as soon as you have registered on the web, otherwise your registration is considered invalid.

Payment can be made by either:

cheque (payable to "The University of Hong Kong"), or

through departmental requisition (for applicants supported by departments) as either of the following:
- by login HKU Portal (http://hkuportal.hku.hk) => My Page tab => Campus Information Services => Central IT Services => Order License and Goods,or
- by the CC Order Form (CF-36) available at http://www.its.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.

Once accepted, the fee is not refundable. However, substitution of participant is possible by written notification to the Centre.

The Computer Centre reserves the right to cancel the courses if there is insufficient enrollment. Applicants will be notified by email or telephone of the course cancellation and all course fees collected will be refunded in full.
